The density of beer is temperature-dependent.
The higher the temperature, the lower the density and vice versa.
Therefore, beer spindles are usually set to 20 °C.
Deviations must be corrected accordingly. Correction tables are usually enclosed with the beer spindle (see table below).
Thus, °P (degrees Plato) or %gew (percent by weight) can be read off the scale of the beer spindle (from below; see picture below).
A value of 12 °P indicates that 120 g or 12 %gew of extract is contained in 1000 g of wort. The brewer speaks of 12 ° original wort.
Hobby brewers can use spindles with a measuring range of 0 to 20 °P.
For more precise determinations, there are spindles with a restricted measuring range, such as one each for 0 - 7, 7 - 14, 14 - 21 °P.
